(NYS Unemployment Benefits)
My wife and 1 year old daughter have recently relocated to Tennessee for employment.
She could not find a job in NYS.
She was just hired as an assistant manager at an automotive shop. I am still in NY working.
Can I quit my job and be able to collect unemployment until I find a job in Tennessee so I can be with my wife and daughter?
Is it good cause to quit work in New York to relocate with wife who found employment in Tennessee?
Hi Peter,
You know, when I get this kind of questions from a man .. my protective woman antennae start going wild and I start thinking subjectively , vs. keeping my nose out of it and thinking objectively.
You told me this: “My wife and 1 year old daughter have recently relocated to Tennessee for employment.
However, you next told me, “She was just hired as an assistant manager at an automotive shop” which suggests a lapse in time not accounted for that she might have been looking for work.
That in turn suggests there may have been other reasons than just finding employment for her moving so far way from you.
I admit, I have an active imagination at work most of the time but then being able to mince words is a skill relevant to getting unemployment benefits and suspecting someone might just be a wife stalker type isn’t out of the realm of possibility here.
There are certain elements of showing good cause for trailing a spouse that are very relevant to the issue to prove their really was good cause.
I suggest you read this information located at the NY UI interpreservice.
And forgive me if I was completely off base about you. My imagination is speculative, but it is based on what is a reality for many women.
This is why I have no problem with UI laws that allow for good cause to quit when trailing a spouse also, require you to prove things other than the spouse moved for a quit to be with good cause.
