Question: If the company I work for closes, can I collect unemployment?

Yes, unless they have sold to someone else and that someone else makes an offer of suitable work. This is when people get into trouble when it comes to getting unemployment.

No doubt, you would be entitled when one closes due to being laid off, but any benefits you would be entitled to for the lack of work claim could be endangered when the state is informed you refused an offer of work from the new owners that is considered to be suitable instead of collecting unemployment.

If this isn’t your situation .. happy collecting.

Did Obama pass a law that entitles you to 12 months of benefits if they closed doors on place of employment and did not offer any other jobs.

That would be news to me.

My company is located in Long island NY and they plan to move to NYC soon. The travel will cost an additional $400.00 per month due to the railroad cost. Can i receive unemployment?

Thanks for mentioning the actual reason you’re considering quitting .. even if I can’t say yea or nay.

However, it does give me something to discuss.

When the employer alters the conditions of employment .. an employee has to consider whether the change is substantial enough to provide good cause to quit.

In your case, you might also want to find out what is considered substantial enough to quit with good cause when an employer reduces a person’s wages as it might be relevant inasmuch that when an employer relocates .. the cost of getting to work can be equated to a loss of income.

And you should also acquaint yourself with what NY says about quitting due to travel, time, or distance.

Clearly, it’s possible you may have good cause.

But, only you can know for sure.
