US Contractor in Afghanistan – Can I pre-file for unemployment in Colorado?
Greetings,
I am currently a contractor for a US based company, working in Afghanistan. The company has stated that after a one year contract we are entitled to unemployment benefits through the state of Colorado, regardless of where we live. The company is based out of Colorado and pays into the unemployment system in Colorado.
I know that my contract is over in November, and it is currently September. Can I file now with a start date of November for benefits, knowing that I meet all the criteria to draw unemployment?
I doubt that I will be out of work long, I’m simply looking for the right position with the right company. I have a few offers standing on the table, but I want to make sure I’m covered for basic necessities while not working back in the US.
Thank you,
Carl
Greetings back at you Carl.
Before I get to your question .. I have a question for you.
My unemployed brother is currently considering a job doing what you are doing now .. working for an American based employer in Afghanistan?
I, along with the rest of the family are concerned for his safety of course, especially since he has other American based offers to consider as well. Any thoughts to share about your year of experience in this position?
As for your question.
I do not know of any exception that would allow you to pre-file a claim for benefits. You have to be unemployed at least partially, to have a valid claim for benefits.
