The stub on my husband’s unemployment checks references a expiration date of his claim, which is December 2009. It also references a remaining dollar amount, which is around $3000. The money will run out way before December 2009, and I was anticipating an extension, but now I’m wondering if that’s an option. Are extensions granted based on the date or the dollars? If he runs out before the ending date on his claim, what happens?
Thanks for your wonderful site!!

Hi Danielle,
Thank you .. you’re very kind to say so .. because I’m totally frustrated with how disorganized it is:)
Your question raises one of those ironies .. about unemployment .. 26 weeks of benefits .. don’t last for 52 .. so what’s up with a “benefit year” .. shouldn’t it be a six month benefit period????
It’s all designed to keep anyone willing, from cheating and force the rest of us back to work .. because it’s so much fun trying to live on about 1/2 what we made before… we don’t want to go back to work … I think it’s logic more suited for dealing with small children and that’s a big if because most children would recognize what’s going on:)
And without further ado .. here’s the page to California’s FAQ page about unemployment extensions.
They apparently, automatically file for the first extension for you .. if you qualify .. I’d verify that information .. but that’s just me.
